Kirstin Mitchell's art journey began with portraits but shifted towards a fascination with patterns and abstract forms, showcased in her vibrant abstract works of the 1990s. After moving to Santa Fe, she explored the muted tones of the New Mexican landscape, culminating in a series reflecting over fifteen years of observation. Mitchell's struggle between depicting what she sees and expressing what she feels is evident in her works, which transcend traditional southwestern landscapes. Her art harmonizes light and dark contrasts, exploring negative space and abstract elements to simplify and clarify her vision, offering a deeper understanding of the world by imposing order upon chaos.
